  2.                          Windows 386 Information
  3. ===============================================================================

  5. The purpose of this note is to alert those considering Windows 386 to a fact
  6. which I learned by fumbling around today. 
  7.  
  8. 1. Windows 386 works only with FDISK. This means that hard disks partitioned
  9. with Seagate's DM, Storage Dimension's SpeedStore may not work, or any other
  10. software which is not FDISK.
  11.  
  12. 2. The types of problems encountered vary by partioning software. What I ran
  13. into with a Seagate 60 MB fixed disk was Window's inability to use SmartDrv.Sys
  14. with the DmDrvr.Bin file. Microsoft's cheery technical support version reported that most people using
  15. this combination could get Windows 386 running but "couldn't access the C
  16. drive."

  18. 3. As far as we can tell, Windows 286 is less volatile, and it will work with
  19. DM and the Seagate. We will post other bulletins about this as we continue to
  20. deal with clients who believe Microsoft's advertisements.

  22. 4. If a problem is encountered, the only reliable fix--and the only one which
  23. Microsoft's technical support people will discuss--is to use DOS 3.3's FDISK.

  25. We hope this saves somebody the killer morning we had trying to figure out why
  26. a $8,000 386 couldn't let its owner write a memo using Windows Write and
  27. a mouse. Microsoft wants to keep us on our toes, I guess.
